Step 8
Reflect with your
students
Reflection fosters student agency and buy-in. It’s important to reflect together on why they are doing the activities and to set specific goals to inform next steps. This can be a short informal conversation (less than 2 minutes) as you move back to the classroom. Start your next tutoring session by reminding the student of what they wanted to work on next.
Prompt your student
Ask your student to verbally respond to one or two of these questions or prompts:
What did you learn today?
What was your favourite part?
What was easy or hard today?
What would you like to do next time?
“I’m getting better at…”
“I was excited to learn…”
“I’d like to get better at…”
What next?
If the student was able to read and spell most words correctly, plan to teach the next concept on the scope and sequence.
Add a few sentences to the reflection section of your lesson plan describing how your student responded and what you’d like to work on next.
Tips!
Check with your mentor teacher if you’re not sure about next steps.
Keep including review of past concepts in every lesson to consolidate learning.
